Projects

Examples of some Projects Undertaken

1. Hospitals

1.1. Groote Schuur hospital

The largest Hospital with which the practice has been involved was undoubtedly the New Groote Schuur Hospital, for which they were in consortium with Clinkscales Maughan-Brown and Partners. While the new Hospital was being built, a separate office, supervised by Paul von Zwiklitz, was run and at its height employed some 8 Engineers and 12 draughtsmen. The final value of the services in the new hospital was approximately R80m in 1988, and these included electrical, standby plants, air conditioning, refrigeration, medical and other gases, fire detection and alarms, building management, pneumatic transport, central vacuum cleaning, screened rooms, steam and water, communications and lift installations.

1.2.Paarl hospital

During the period 1998 – 2012 we were involved as Consulting Engineers for the complete refurbishment of the Paarl Provincial Hospital, a project that proceeded over two stages at a cost for electrical services of around R50m. The services under our control included the main electrical installation as well as the Nurse Call, Fire detection and Alarm, Data and Telephone Cabling, New PABX and the provision of new lifts and refurbishment of existing lifts (the Lift work being undertaken in association with WAC Projects)

We are currently involved in the construction of a new Psychiatric Block at that Hospital, being responsible again for the Electrical and Low Voltage services

1.3.Other provincial hospital projects

The practice has had extensive experience on various smaller schemes at Provincial Hospitals such as George, Mossel Bay, Vredendal, Kimberley and Porterville

1.4.wynberg 2 military hospital

We are currently involved as Consulting Electrical Engineers for the complete refurbishment of 2 Military Hospital at Wynberg. Services under our control include Electrical, Nurse Call, Data and Telephone Cabling and Security

1.5.Private hospitals

We have been Consultants to the Life Healthcare Group and its predecessors for many years, having undertaken most of the electrical and mechanical work at Life Vincent Pallotti Hospital since it was originally built, including numerous upgrades, and recently completed the electrical services for the upgrade to the Kingsbury Life Hospital

2.Commercial Buildings

We have been involved in many Commercial Buildings over the years, the latest and probably most challenging of which was probably the redevelopment of the Checkers Centre in Sea Point as The Point for Berman Brothers and HCI.

3.Hotels

We have been involved in numerous Hotel projects, including electrical and mechanical services to extensions to the Protea Hotel at Saldanha Bay, electrical services to the new Cullinan Hotel and North Wharf on the old power station site in Cape Town, the mechanical and electrical services for the “Rooms in the Roof” project at the Winchester mansions Hotel in Sea Point.

4. REsidential projects

In the residential field we have in the past years looked after the services for Rocklands luxury flats in Sea Point, West Side Studio loft apartment development in Buitengracht Street, Cape Town, Bantry Place and Bantry Point in Bantry Bay Mouille Sands, the Legacy, and the Odyssey in Green Point and The Herschel in Claremont. We are currently involved with Glenmain and the Fairmont in Sea Point as well as planned blocks of flats in St John’s Rd and Kings Rd for the Berman Brothers Group, and the redevelopment of the Warwick site in Green Point for Spear Properties.

5.Educational Buildings

Over the years have been involved in numerous projects of an educational nature, involving both schools and tertiary institutions. In addition to the Cape Provincial Administration, for whom both schools and hostels have been built in Kimberley, Oudtshoorn, Milnerton, Postmasburg, George, Mossel Bay and of course in Cape Town itself, work has been done for the University of Cape Town (including the Woolsack Residences), and the Peninsula Technikon.

6.Security and Access Control

We were as Principal Agents, responsible for the complete overhaul of the security access control system at Parliament. Owing to the sensitive nature of the project, no further details can be given. Similar work was also done as part of the refurbishment of 90 Plein St for use by parliament, where we were also involved as consulting electrical engineers.

Similar work was undertaken at the Provincial Legislature at Pietermaritzburg for the Kwazulu Natal Provincial Legislature, and at three sites owned by the KZN Department of Works, in association with Charles Pein and Partners.
